Pride And Prejudice (468 words) Essay Example For Students

Pride And Prejudice (468 words) Essay Pride and PrejudiceThe entry which best relates the subject of Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austin, is on page 125, in the page. This is the place Mr. Darcy is proposing to Elizabeth, and is educating her regarding the mediocrity of her family and associations. This section is critical in light of the fact that it is one of only a handful hardly any occasions where the characters transparently recognize that the sole reason for a people life is to accomplish a significant compensation and a high social position. It is apparent from each purpose of the story that all individuals care about is wedding into a higher social status. What's more, in any event, for the individuals who are OK with their present status, it is basic that they just wed somebody of in any event identical position. This thought has each character in the story and appears to persuade each move that is made. The triviality of this thought ventures to such an extreme as to break the powers of profound devotion. Darcy is happy to affront a young lady as he is proposing to her, equitable to advise her regarding the what he needs to experience so as to go as far as somebody of her level. Notwithstanding what Darcy thoughthis chances were at acknowledgment, he was all the while tending to a young lady that scarcely knows him, and really hates him. That isn't where put-down are probably going to bring results. This point is intensified on the grounds that Elizabeth just gets somewhat offended by this remark. Her underlying refusal of Darcy was basedalmost absolutely on his activities towards Jane and Bingleys relationship, and his treatment of Mr. Wickham. In any case, she is scarcely irritated by this remark of Darcy with respect to her family. This is so abnormal in light of the fact that one would anticipate that Elizabeth should at any rate be similarly distraught for individual put-down just as for what was done to other people. Pride and Prejudice closes with Elizabeth and Darcy each beating their resentment against one another, and beginning to look all starry eyed at. Notwithstanding, this contacting scene is destroyed in view of the presence of Lady Catherine. She requests Elizabeth to wed Darcy, and reveals to Darcy that it would look adversely on his family if he somehow happened to wed somebody as low class as Elizabeth. So even ones family is eager to separate genuine romance so as to look after position. This topic runs all through the whole story and truly devastates the whole thing. Different stories, for example, Romeo and Juliet, have a similar kind of prohibited relationships, and since those show up out of genuine circumstances, they add more enthusiasm to the story. Here, it is just preference by rich individuals against more unfortunate individuals, which just brings down the composition. So while this subject may have existed as a general rule during Jane Austens lifetime, it ought not have been remembered for the story.

Romanticism Arts Essay examples -- essays research papers

Sensation, creative mind, and judgment are interrelated in the experience of workmanship. Burke clarifies how sensation, creative mind, and judgment decide the experience of joy and torment, and how joy and torment are spoken to by the tasteful ideas of magnificence and sublimity.     Burke says that, so as to comprehend the birthplace of our thoughts of the wonderful and delightful, we should inspect the experience of torment and joy.      Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich has an artwork that will leave watchers in thought. His work of art, The Wanderer at the Sea of Fog, leaves us to consider what has occurred. We see a man, wearing all dark, remaining on an edge of rocks. He looks out into a delightful open sky, somewhat overcast, with the sun setting. There is an orange cloudiness left as the impression of the sun fills the sky. Be that as it may, we can't see his face. We don't have the foggiest idea about his outward appearance, in the event that he is pitiful, or on the off chance that he simply needed to see the view.            The end of joy may bring about a condition of detachment, dissatisfaction, or sadness. Then again, the finish of agony may bring about a condition of lack of concern, joy, or enjoyment. Burke utilizes the term "delight" to allude to a delight which is brought about by the expulsion of torment, while he utilizes the term "joy" to allude to a joy which emerges all by itself. As I see this artistic creation, I attempt and miracle if this artwork h...

Multicultural Essay Example For Students

Multicultural Essay The objective of the Olympic Movement is to add to building a serene and better world by teaching youth through game rehearsed without separation of any sort and in the Olympic soul which requires shared getting, fellowship, solidarity and reasonable play. Multicultural Essayism is an approach dependent on rights and duties, which has been supported by Australian governments for dealing with a brought together country, which is socially various. It is an approach that depends on shared regard, whereby individuals from Australias various networks regard every others contrasts. Sydneys Bid for the 2000 Olympic Games advanced the citys social assorted variety. In September 1993, SOCOG Board Vice President and Sydneys Lord Mayor, Frank Sartor, was Quoted: A Sydney Games in 2000 could give the stage to a thousand years of multiracial and multicultural concordance. I couldnt help concurring with her contention dependent on what I have found in my life up until this point. I have seen blacks irritated in stores and denied lodging. At the time I essentially felt it was really awful and overlooked it. As indicated by Tatum I was rehearsing inactive prejudice and I concur with her on that. I have done nothing to attempt to change the framework and I do procure the benefits of being white whether I like it. I accept that perusing this book has made me fully aware of how much prejudice despite everything exists in this nation that professes to maintain equivalent rights. Another contention that Tatum talks about is the manner by which everyone is preferential somehow. I likewise accept this is valid, nearly everybody I know has made a supremacist joke or chuckled in any event. I accept this is a direct result of the manner in which we were raised, when we were youthful we had inquiries regarding different races that stayed unanswered. This is another motivation behind why it is difficult for me to talk about race transparently. At that point obviously there is impact by our companions that can help or hurt our convictions. To the extent the logical work on race is concerned I accept that most of the researchers had solid supremacist conclusions and sentiments before they even began thier explore. The entirety of the researchers who composed the articles in reproduce #1 have all the earmarks of being white and have profited by the bigot society to get into their situation in any case, so for what reason would it be coherent for them to distribute anything great about minorities that would issues when individuals like this who have the ability to show utilize their capacity to spread an undermine this arrangement of points of interest that they have blossomed with. These are the reasons why I figure these individuals could attempt to pass this stuff of as logical research. It is a miserable condition of supremacist message. These researchers were regarded and Im sure their assertion was taken truly by the overall population. These men utilized their situations to spread their supremacist sees as I would see it. The primary concerns that I have gained from my readings is that the general public we live in today isn't what it is supposed to be. Minorities are continually being exploited and victimized. Until this framework is changed or possibly recognized by most of individuals living here these issues will remain. From what I have perused and found in my life the relations among whites and minority bunches has improved yet at the same time has far to go before we can genuinely say that are rights are equivalent. Informal Learning Experience free essay sample

This paper will examine how my sisters’ illicit drug use has been a casual learning experience for me and how my life has been affected attempting to assist her with this habit. I will talk about how her involvement in drugs happened through old style molding by, recognizing the unconditioned improvement, unconditioned reaction, adapted boost, and the molded reaction. I will likewise clarify how her experience happened through operant molding by portraying the conduct, the outcomes, and fortifications of her chronic drug use. At long last, I will address how my learning experience happened through intellectual social learning and how impacts of media and preference played a factor. Experiencing childhood in an unassuming community with no aspiration to set objectives and your everything about your companions, you will head down a dull forlorn way. At 17 years old, my sister Kaitlin concluded that her companions realized what was best for and took to drugs. She stayed nearby an inappropriate groups and the natural improvement outweighed sustain. We will compose a custom article test on Casual Learning Experience or on the other hand any comparative point explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page My mother would not like to accept that her little girl was dependent on drugs. It wasn’t until the cops indicated my mother an image from the ATM machine, which demonstrated Kaitlin pulling back cash and things in house fired coming up missing. July of 2009 our Dad was hit by an alcoholic driver. I believed this would be Kaitlin’s huge reminder. She realized that our dad needed her to get spotless and how glad she would make him on the off chance that she kicked this fixation. In August 2009, I permitted Kaitlin to move in with me and my family. Obviously, she had exacting rules and rules to follow or I wouldn’t waver to show her out. She enlisted at the junior college and thought she was all good. after 2 weeks, I saw that checks were clearing under a financial balance that I never contact. Low and be hold Kaitlin was fashioning my name to my checks and pulling back a large number of dollars. I squeezed chargers on her for fabrication and robbery. Now, I have had enough; I had 3 children that I expected to pay special mind to their prosperity. I couldn’t burn through any longer time or exertion on my sister. It was strong but fair affection starting now and into the foreseeable future. Kaitlin spiraled crazy. In September 2009, our sibling contacted me to help get Kaitlin in a recovery program out of the province of Maryland or we would cover another relative. We found a spot in Louisiana that had a 90% achievement rate. To make a long story short in 2012 Kaitlin winds up pregnant. Swears here and there she is perfect and hasn’t been utilizing. On March tenth, 2013, my niece (Peyton) was conceived, dependent on heroin and various different medications. I have opened my heart and home to this great child young lady. She is a genuine gift. I needed to disappear from nonappearance from work without pay to accommodate Peyton. It was a harsh 2 months watching her go through withdrawals. She is right around a year old and flourishing. Tragically, being pregnant couldn’t make Kaitlin quit utilizing drugs. Right up 'til the present time she is as yet utilizing drugs. Kaitlin’s dependence began with old style molding, a learning procedure that happens through relationship between an ecological improvement and a normally happening boost. Behaviorism depends on the presumption that learning happens through associations with the earth (Cherry, n. d). A nonpartisan boost turns into an adapted improvement equipped for delivering a given reaction subsequent to being over and over gave the unconditioned (noteworthy) upgrade (Carpenter Huffman, 2010). For instance, a fiend may utilize moving papers, a funnel, or a syringe, and so on (contingent improvement) contingent upon the medication of their decision. A fiend will in the end pine for the medication of decision within the sight of these things (adapted reaction), in any event, when the medication isn't current (unconditioned boost). The nonappearance of the real medication will prompt a staggering want to utilize, (unrestricted reaction). At the point when the medications and all the things are available and their body is experiencing withdrawals, when the molded and unconditioned boosts happen together, the someone who is addicted is weak. Operant molding (instrumental molding) is a strategy for discovering that happens through remunerations and disciplines for conduct (Cherry, n. d). Operant molding has not worked for my sister. One would feel that losing your kid would be discipline in its self. Or on the other hand confronting prison time for burglary. Despite the fact that Kaitlin is confronted with the potential outcomes, for example, prison time, the loss of her youngster, and conceivably passing, she despite everything gives no indications of needing assistance. Before a junkie can get the assist they with expecting to concede that they have an issue. On the in addition to side, due to Kaitlins enslavement, I was compensated with a delightful infant young lady. Intellectual Social learning alludes to a mental model of conduct. Learning happens in a social setting and what is discovered is increased through perception. Addicts have perspectives, convictions, desires, inspirations, and feelings that influence learning (Carpenter Huffman, 2010). There are three center ideas of social learning. Initially, is the possibility that individuals can learn through perception. Second, the possibility that inward mental states are a fundamental piece of this procedure. Third, this hypothesis perceives that since something has been educated, it doesn't imply that it will bring about an adjustment in conduct (Denler, H. , Wolters, C. , Benzon, M, 2014). Chronic drug use assumes a significant job with your psychological perspective. Kaitlin is currently 27 years of age yet has the cerebrum mindset of a multi year old. She is bipolar and a stimulant. Its said to need to kick back and watch the medications destroy her cerebrum and realizing that her psychological perspective will keep on disintegrating. Media and preference on learning can impact child rearing practices, the general culture, and individual youngster factors. It basically bodes well for guardians and different grown-ups to screen the sum and substance of the media youngsters are utilizing. Grown-ups must contemplate the sorts of impacts kids are presented to all the time and settle on cognizant choices dependent on the individual kids included (Cook, J. L, 2010) . It isnt TV fundamentally that has positive or negative impacts, yet what is depicted and how families handle it. In the event that guardians conversed with their kids about illicit drug use and how this is a hard infection to over come. How medications are destructive to their wellbeing and the various sorts of outcomes you would be confronted with, in the event that you decided to utilize drugs. Would help manage our kids the correct way. Telling kids that something is awful, a great deal of times gives them that interest of needing to attempt it in any case. I utilize my sister has an extraordinary guide to my kids on why you shouldnt use drugs. They got the chance to see direct what medications can to do you, and seeing poor little Peyton experience withdrawals, broke their little hearts. I think their should more promotions on TV and on bulletins about illicit drug use, advising youngsters not to utilize drugs. All in all, my casual learning involvement in managing a medication dependent sister, has made me fully aware of the kind of condition we live in. Despite the fact that I converse with my youngsters about medications, it despite everything stresses me as they get more established, will their companions have more force and attempt to convince them down an inappropriate way or will they tune in and utilize their Aunt has a case of what not to do? The choices we make in life will either frequent us or make us a superior individual. Old style molding is a scholarly conduct that occurs with or without the nearness of the improvement. Operant molding is realizing that there are ramifications for this educated conduct (medicate use), that outcomes in discipline (loss of your girl, the nearness of old companions, spots and things bringing about conceivable backslide). Subjective social learning is going to the acknowledgment that through interest and recuperation programs, tuning in to different addicts stories, and perceiving how a few addicts decided to recoup.

A Book Lovers Guide to the 2017 Oscar Nominees

A Book Lovers Guide to the 2017 Oscar Nominees Authors Note: A Man Called Ove was inadvertently left off this list. The post has been corrected.   Its no secret that books are a rich source of inspiration for movies. And if you find that you rarely disagree with the the book is better than the movie premise, the 2017 Oscar nominees will give you plenty of fodder to fill up your TBR shelves. Every year I see every single nominated film, and of the 62 nominated films across all categories that Ill attempt to watch, 18 have bookish origins. Alphabetically by film, heres a breakdown of all the book-to-movie info: 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi Nominations: Sound Mixing Adapted from: 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi by Mitchell Zuckoff (2014)  13 Hours tells the story of the events of September 11, 2012 when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A Man Called Ove Nominations: Best Foreign Language Adapted from: Fredrik Backmans novel, A Man Called Ove (2014) Ove is a curmudgeon. He seems to hate everyone and everything in his small Swedish community. He has staunch principals, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind this grumpy facade is a heartbreaking story and a lovable man, if only he would let someone see it. I cried my way through the back half of this book and a solid 75% of the movie. Both are exceptional. Arrival Nominations: Best Picture,  Director,  Adapted Screenplay,  Sound Editing,  Sound Mixing,  Cinematography,  Film Editing,  Production Design Adapted from: Ted Chiangs 1998 short story The Story of Your Life from the collection Stories of Your Life and Others Without giving too many spoilers, the film and Chiangs acclaimed story upon which it is based follows a woman who, as a linguistics expert, is tasked with figuring out how to communicate with an alien race that has unexpectedly shown up on Earth. Both the film and the story provide a nuanced examination of language, humanity, and the nature of time  that is as exquisite on screen as it is on the page. Blind Vaysha Nominations: Best Animated Short Adapted from: a short story of the same name by  Georgi Gospodinov, in the collection, And Other Stories (Writings from an Unbound Europe) The film, based on Bulgarian Gospodinovs story,  tells story of a girl who sees past out of her left eye and the future from her rightâ€"and so is unable to live in the present. Doctor Strange Nominations:  Visual Effects Adapted from: Marvel Universes Doctor Strange character, which has been part of MCU for decades. For something  most similar to the movie, Jason Aarons most recent run, in Doctor Strange Vol. 1: The Way of the Weird and Vol. 2: The Last Days of Magic  is the best place to start. Vol. 3: Blood in the Aether is forthcoming this March. Basically, the origin story is that  surgeon Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, learns the mystic arts from the Ancient One, played (controversially) by Tilda Swinton,  after a career-ending car accident and after becoming brilliantly magical, faces off against a former pupil of the Ancient One, played by a criminally  misused Mads Mikkelsen. Come for Cumberbatch, stay for the visual effects. Elle Nominations:  Best Actress (Isabelle Huppert) Adapted from: Oh by  Philippe Djian, a 2012 French thriller that is unfortunately not available in an English-language translation. Trigger warnings abound: A woman is brutally raped in her apartment by a masked intruder and promptly cleans up the mess and goes back to her life. Im not going to lie, this film is incredibly difficult to watch, for reasons beyond the attack. But Isabelle Huppert gives the chilling performance of her life. Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them Nominations:  Production Design, Costume Design Adapted from: isnt it obvious? Just in case youve been living under a rock, this is part of the Potter-verse, and based on the book of the same name, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by her Rowling-ness Set in 1920s New York City, in the magical world of Harry Potter, British wizard  Newt Scamander arrives  on a ship, intending to head to Arizona to drop off one his many magical creatures. But his trip is interrupted by  something mysterious leaving a path of destruction in the streets, threatening to expose the wizarding community to the No-Majs (American for Muggles), including the Second Salemers, a fanatical faction bent on eradicating them. To top it off  powerful, dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, after wreaking havoc in Europe, is nowhere to be found. Even if youre not a fan of HP, the costumes and production design are incredible and the story stands well on its own. Fences Nominations:  Best Picture, Best Actor (Denzel Washington), Best Supporting Actress (Viola Davis), Adapted Screenplay Adapted from: August Wilsons 1983 play, Fences. While not strictly a bookish adaptation, the play is worth reading on its own. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning sixth part of Wilsons 10-part Pittsburgh Cycle, the film was adapted by the playwright before his death in 2005 and examines race, family, and ambition in the 1950s. Denzel starred in the Broadway revival and both he and Viola have earned well-deserved nominations in this adaptation. Hidden Figures Nominations: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer), Adapted Screenplay Adapted from:  Margot Lee Shetterlys 2016 nonfiction book,  Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race Though the film takes some historical liberties, both it and Shetterlys book  are fist-pumping celebrations of brilliant women of color who transformed NASA and sadly were unacknowledged beyond the scientific and mathematics community. The movie is an amazing achievement, both for cheering these women but also for the black actresses that portray them: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe. See the movie, applaud with the rest of your audience, then read the book ASAP. I Am Not Your Negro Nominations: Best Documentary Feature Adapted from:  James Baldwins unfinished manuscript, Remember This House. While this manuscript is unavailable as a standalone work, the filmmaker Raoul Peck has released a companion to the film that is primarily made up of this text. Peck mined James Baldwins vast published and unpublished archives to create a documentary that not only reflects on Baldwins feelings about his assassinated friends, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Medgar Evers, but about race and society in America. Though he was writing in the 196os, Baldwins words (as narrated by Samuel L. Jackson) provides a striking commentary about modern day racial conflicts. (If youre looking for more Baldwin once youve seen this doc, James Baldwin: Collected Essays is a good place to start.) The Jungle Book Nominations:  Best Visual Effects Adapted from: Rudyard Kiplings collection of stories, The Jungle Book While its been done and redone, this live-action adaptation of Kiplings tales about Mogli, a man cub raised in the jungles of India, is just as delightful and terrifying as the original animated Disney version. Keeping your favorite musical numbers from the 1967 film (youll totally want to sing along to Bear Necessities), the visual spectacle of this story as a live-action production is worth the price of admission alone. Life, Animated Nominations: Best Documentary Feature Adapted from: Ron Suskinds 2014 memoir,  Life, Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes, and Autism Suskinds son, Owen, who can only communicate through the language of Disney movies, is at the center of  this story, told by his Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist father. At three years old, the once-chatty Owen stops speaking completely and his family is at a loss for how to reach himuntil Owens love and obsession with Disney films provides a pathway to language and a sense of being and empathy for the whole family. Lion Nominations: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Dev Patel), Best Supporting Actress (Nicole Kidman), Adapted Screenplay, Original Score, Cinematography Adapted from: A Long Way from Home by  Saroo Brierley (2014) Based on Brierleys memoir, the film starring Dev Patel follows a five-year-old Saroo who, accompanying his big brother to work, falls asleep on a train that takes him hundreds of miles away from his home. Unable to read or write or even remember his own last name, Saroo survives in Calcutta before being adopted by an Australian family. As an adult Saroo is haunted by a family he misses and sets out on a quest (via Google Earth) to find his mother and brother. Bring tissues. My Life as a Zucchini Nominations: Best Animated Feature Adapted from:  Autobiographie Dune Courgette by Gilles Paris Sadly another entry that is not available in English, this story of a boy nicknamed Courgette (French for zucchini, hence the films title) who is shuttled off to a foster home after his mother disappears. Befriend by a police officer who accompanies him to this foster home filled with  other orphans his age, Courgette struggles to find his place in this sometimes hostile environment and the world at large. Nocturnal Animals Nominations: Best Supporting Actor (Michael Shannon) Adapted from:  Tony and Susan by Austin Wright (1993) Not only is Tom Fords film based on a thriller by Austin Wright, the movies primary narrative device is a novel. A story within a story, the real world story revolves around an ex-husband and wife; he has written a novel, the manuscript of which he sends to her and which she becomes consumed by, that is the other half of this film. Moving between both the real world and the fictional story, these characters are forced to reckon with their own past misdeeds. I havent read the book this movie is based on, but if its anything like its twisty adaptation, it deserves to be rediscovered by a new readership. Silence Nominations: Best Cinematography Adapted from: Silence: A Novel by  Shusaku Endo (1966) Languishing for decades in development limbo, Martin Scorseses passion project follows two Jesuit priests from Portugal into 17th century Japan, where Christians are routinely slaughtered, to find their missing mentor and spread Catholicism. I cant speak to the novel upon which the movie is based, but let me save you three hours, Silence is  a plodding (mostly very boring) examination of the dichotomy of faith and prudence. Suicide Squad Nominations:  Best Makeup and Hairstyling Adapted from: DC Comics team of villains of the same name. Your best bet is to wait until March for  Suicide Squad Vol. 1: The Black Vault (Rebirth). Yes, Suicide Squad was nominated for an Oscar. Ihave no words. Sully Nominations: Best Sound Editing Adapted from:  Highest Duty by Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow (2009) Also known as Sully: Miracle on the Hudson, this film (based on the pilots memoir) follows  Sullenbergers January 2009 emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, in which all 155 passengers and crew survived with only minor injuries, and the subsequent publicity and investigation. Also, its Tom Hanks.

The Prince and Its Relation to Measure for Measure - Literature Essay Samples

While the connection between Machiavelli and Marlowe is distinctly articulated in the preface to the latters Jew of Malta, the parallels between Machiavellis Prince and Shakespeares Measure for Measure are less explicitly expressed, but certainly no less significant. One must, of course, be cautious in suggesting that Shakespeare was familiar with Machiavellis Prince in its original form it is most likely that he read one of the numerous English or French paraphrases that were circulating at the time. There is no doubt, however, that the great majority of characters in Measure for Measure the Duke, Angelo, Claudio, Pompey and even Isabella display Machiavellian qualities. An comparison of key passages, both of The Prince and Measure for Measure, will establish this very fact.A study of kingship, arguably the entire premise for Measure for Measure, is immediately introduced in the first scene, with the Dukes declaration Of government the properties to unfold/ Would seem in me ta ffect speech and discourse. It is not until the third scene of act one, however, that this political discussion becomes specific and, ultimately, linked to the Machiavellian notion of statecraft. In this scene, which details the exchange between Vincentio and the Friar, we learn the reasons for the formers deputising of Angelo. Both of the Dukes significant dialogues I.iii.20-33 and I.iii.36-55 reveal that, for the last fourteeen years, the strict statutes and most biting laws (I.iii.20) punishing pre-marital intercourse have slipped into disuse. Although this scene is by no means extensive, it furnishes the reader with much food for thought. Vincentios Machiavellianism, as manifest in the above scene, is centred upon three main elements his previous laxity, his present need to deflect responsibility and his use of Angelo as an instrument in effecting the enforcement of this most biting law. Upon closer inspection, both of Measure for Measure and The Prince, we discern that the neglect apparent in the Dukes initial non-enforcement of the law may not really be neglect at all, but rather a strategic choice. Immediately relevant are Machiavellis remarks on the need to avoid contempt and hatred : a prince who wants to maintain his rule is often forced not to be good, because whenever that class of men on which you believe your continued rule depends is corrupt, whether it be the populace, or soldiers, or nobles, you have to satisfy it by adopting the same disposition; and then are good deeds your enemies. By not enforcing a law which the vast majority of citizens the base and the noble at some point transgress, Vincentio ensures the stability of his position. The appointment of Angelo as deputy is complex, to say the least, and can be variously interpreted. We could assume that the Dukes remarks display his awareness of the hypocrisy of personally enforcing the law Sith twas my fault to give the people scope,Twould be my tyranny to strike and gall th em For what I bid them do (I.iii.36-38). Of course, one may just as easily argue that the Dukes newfound morality is a direct result of the realisation that he, like the rod of the law, is perhaps more mocked than feared (I.iii.28). This interpretation is given credence when we consider the possibility that Lucios remarks regarding the Duke may to some degree be representative of a general spirit of disdain rather than just a humorous product of his bawdy and irreverent nature. Neither must we forget the Dukes own avowal which is couched in very negative (and martial) terms: I have on Angelo imposed the office,Who may in thambush of my name strike homeAnd yet my nature never in the fight To do in slander. (I.iii.41-44) Clearly, Vincentio wishes to distance himself as far as he can from an act which will inevitably engender hatred, resentment and civic disturbance (if not defiance, as we see in the case of Pompey, who declares to Mistress Overdone in I.ii.91, Ill be your tapster still.) Once again the Duke has clearly taken the advice of Machiavelli, who repeatedly argues that the wise princes best defence is the goodwill of his subjects:a wise prince who is more afraid of his own people than of foreigners builds fortresses; he who is more afraid of foreigners than of his own people rejects them [] your best possible fortress is that your subjects do not hate you [] I blame any prince who considers the hatred of his people unimportant. The substitution of Angelo for the Duke also recalls Machiavellis account of the Duke of Romagna:After the Duke had seized the Romagna and found it controlled by weak lords[] the whole province was full of thefts, brawls, and every sort of excess[] Hence he put in charge there Messer Remirro de Orco, a man cruel and ready, to whom he gave the most complete authority. This man in a short time rendered the province peaceful and united, gaining enormous prestige. Then the Duke decided there was no further need for such bound less power; so he set up a civil court in the midst of the province[] And because he knew that past severities had made some men hate him, he determined to purge such mens minds and win them over entirely by showing that any cruelty which had gone on did not origiate with himself but with the harsh nature of his agent. So getting an opportunity for it, one morning at Cesena he had Messer Remirro laid in two pieces in the public square with a block of wood and a bloody sword near him. What Machiavelli alludes to in the above passage is the Dukes realisation of Orco as a potential threat, gaining enormous prestigeboundless power. Implicit in this is the Duke of Romagnas awareness of the implications of his forceful capture of the province he is perfectly aware of the possibility that Orco may resort to the same tactics to consolidate and enforce his power. Shakespeares Duke Vincentio betrays a similar concern regarding Angelo. While he needs his services, he does not entirely trust him, and so stays behind to visit both prince and people (I.iii.46) and ascertain If power change purpose(I.iii.55).Other than this last reference to the tendency of power to corrupt, Shakespeare uses allusion and suggestion rather than explicit reference to explore the plays Machiavellian possibilities, and even these are nowhere near as violent as those we find in The Prince itself. A truly Machiavellian play would result in Vincentio killing Angelo and reasserting his power, or Angelo killing the Duke. The most likely of both these possibilities, of course, is the latter throughout the play, Angelo continually reaffirms his Machiavellian qualities. Firstly, he uses his position for personal gain, realising that [his] false oerweighs [Isabellas] true (II.iv.171) and that he is one of those princes against whom charges cannot be brought in court. Secondly, he refuses to rescind Claudios death sentence even after (according to his knowledge) Isabella had fulfilled their agreement Claudios continued existence means the continued probability of his vengeance. Angelo has obviously taken Machiavellis advice regarding the keeping of promises:By no means can a prudent ruler keep his word and he does not when to keep it works against himself and when the reasons that made him promise are annulled. What is perhaps a less well documented aspect of Measure for Measure is Isabellas own (albeit subtle) Machiavellianism. In her first exchange with Angelo (II.ii), which details the failure of the rhetoric for which she is so famous, Isabella is the one who introduces the notion of bribery which leads to Angelos proposal. One also wonders whether it is mere coincidence that the language she uses to signify her religious fervour and purity is so overtly erotic, entrancing and arousing Angelo:Thimpression of keen whips Id wear as rubies,And strip myself to death as to a bedThat longing have been sick for(II.ii.101-103).Not only do these remarks display a k ind of masochistic pleasure in self-flagellation (which is of particular relevance considering Angelos austere attitude to religion), they more importantly provoke the association of violence with power, and power with wealth. This is surely a combination designed to affect Angelo in the most profound manner and make him even more determined to have his way. The ultimate expression of Angelos corruption, however, is prevented by another profoundly Machiavellian concept Fortune who ensures that Vincentio is present at the jail when Isabella visits Claudio to tell him of the terrible bargain she must consider.Sidestepping the conflict inherent in the Medieval fatalist world-view of predestination and the Humanist belief in the power of the individual, Machiavelli proposes a moderate view of Fortune. In chapter XVI of The Prince, this view is very succinctly articulated: Machiavelli asserts that fortune is the arbiter of half the things we do, leaving the other half to be controll ed by ourselves. This latter half is governed by another key Machiavellian concept, virtà ¹, which signifies intellectual prowess. The prince of virtà ¹ must ensure he is as prepared as possible for the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune (for she can be thwarted by diligence ) and modify his behaviour to suit the circumstances. The Dukes obvious lack of control, the constant setbacks he experiences, do not signify inadequacy on his part they represent the obstacles Fortune throws in his path. Vincentios frequent revision of plans is exactly the kind of behaviour Machiavelli praises in The Prince: the one who adapts his policy to the times prospers, and likewise the one whose policy clashes with the demands of the times does not. Fortune, however, does assist the Duke Mariana just happens to love Angelo still, as well as being receptive to the substitution of herself for Isabella, and Vincentio is fortunately present at the jail when Angelos order for Claudios execution (despite Isabella/Marianas compliance) is received. Likewise, the death of Ragozine the pirate, whose head is substituted for Claudios, is highly fortuitous. This is, of course, all necessary to the resolution that occurs in the final act.Shakespeares comic intent subverts the tragic potential of Measure for Measure, and the denouement (while primarily characterised by the reinstatement of just reign and the conventional pairing of couples) is profoundly Machiavellian. Not only does Vincentio conceal his knowledge of Claudios safety from Isabella, he uses it in an impressive display of stagecraft, specifically designed to evoke a sort of mystical awe in all onlookers (including Isabella, who he later asks to marry him). The Duke has clearly enhanced his reputation by the spectacular deeds Machiavelli writes of in his Prince, [finding] a way for punishing or rewarding[] that is sure to be much talked about.
